One year ago today, at the beginning of sophomore year, I found myself constantly angry. I was angry at every inconvenience I came across. For example, after I got a grade on a math test I was unhappy about, I remember texting my friend saying, “My life sucks. I will never graduate high school.” Many similar moments of self-resentment led to an overall anger and dissatisfaction with life. However, after talking to my friends and family about my perception of negative events in my life, they gave me advice that changed my perspective.

A year later, I no longer vent to my friends on how badly my life sucks because of one bad test grade. Instead, I tell myself I will do better next time and instead of sulking over the bad grade, I take action by setting up a meeting with my teacher or changing my study habits to better fit my preparation for the next test. I realized having a negative mindset only buried me into a deeper hole of being ungrateful and unhappy with my life. However, by using these 5 steps on practicing gratitude, my mood gradually increased and I found myself not being as angry as I once was after something did not go the way I planned or wanted it to.

1. Start a gratitude journal

Write down 5 things that you are grateful for everyday. As humans, we tend to focus on the bad and ignore all the little good things that make our lives easier. By writing down as little as 5 things you are grateful for, you will see that in every day, there is always some good in your life. Physically writing down something makes you think about it and tricks your brain into focusing on the good instead of the negative.

2. Volunteer

Throughout freshman-junior year, I began involving myself in community services affiliated with my school. By giving back to communities around my school area, it makes me more aware of everything I have and increases my happiness, knowing that I am making a difference in the community.

3. Spend time with people you love

Spend more time with people who uplift you and contribute positively to your life. These people, whether they be friends, family, or a loved one, will support you and you can practice acts of gratitude on them. Being with the people you love will enhance your happiness and overall gratefulness that you have people who support and love you.

4. Debrief

If you feel overwhelmed or need time alone to think, take a walk or exercise. Listen to music that makes you feel uplifted if you are feeling upset. Reflecting on your day is very important; however, as you debrief, be aware of your surroundings. Be thankful for the environment and notice the little things.

5. Do activities you love

Developing a hobby or playing a sport can enhance your mood and make you feel good about yourself. I have always loved painting and drawing and whenever I find negative thoughts creeping in, I use art to take me to my “happy place.” Find your happy place.
